My practice has many facets, but all of them rely on my gathering together multiple elements and media. One favorite working method employs constellations of abstract photo prints in architectural spaces. I am fascinated when a multitude of images coalesce into an environment. As each image gives up its singular identity, it melts into a larger cosmos. This installation at Indiana University, combines my habit of collecting discarded materials with photography, abstraction, and installation. Nearly 1000 photographs are pinned together, covering a free-standing wall. I shot the full inventory of 5000 images over several months, choosing from my stockpile of paper, glass, plastic, and metal. For five days in the gallery, I selected, arranged, and pinned each print in place, allowing the work to develop slowly, as if it designed itself. The individual prints matter less to me than their relationship to each other. And, as elements gather and align, they form a kind of abstract narrative.
