THE SIMONS FOUNDATION is an extraordinary philanthropic organization dedicated to funding the most challenging forward-looking scientific research. As a member of the publication team, I guided the anniversary project from its earliest conceptual steps through to the final production and printing — an unusually broad set of responsibilities. The richness and diversity of the foundation’s work proved a challenge to embrace within a single book. I organized the material around a series of probing questions that allowed scientists to explain what fascinates, confounds, and pushes them in their field. Neither a dreary recitation of history nor a trivialization of its significance, the final product is an energetic and insightful portrait of a foundation fully alive with humanity and wonder.
