PART HISTORY LESSON, part dime-store novel, part adventure yarn, with hundreds of beautifully rendered illustrations, Frank Reade is perhaps the most complicated design project I had taken on to this point. Of course the trick is not to make it look complicated, but intricate and inviting: fluid and naturally unfolding. I worked closely with authors Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett, as well as fearless Abrams executive editor David Cashion to develop distinct but harmonious looks for the multitude of sections, sidebars, captions, notes and diagrams; doing full justice to the artwork without compromising the clarity.
